American College Testing (ACT)

ACT is a systematized test used for college admissions in the United States. ACT is demanded by colleges across the USA to be taken for application for admission to their undergraduate courses. It also tests students in 4 sections – English, Reading, Math and Science. Main Components of the ACT Classes:

English

The reading test is a 35-minute, 40-question test that aims to measure the aspirants reading comprehension skills. The test is comprised of 4 sections, of which, three contain one long prose passage and the fourth comprised of two shorter length passages. There are four basic genres that passages fall among – Fiction, Humanities, Social and Natural Sciences.

The ACT classes are meant to check your understanding in 2 main areas:

  • Conventions of English: These include Punctuation, grammar, sentence structure etc.
  • Verbal Skills: Consists of strategies like organizing the text and making sure it’s consistently redesigned and made concise.

Math

The Math test is hour long and you’ve got to answer sixty questions within the given time. This works out to about one question per minute. ACT Math covers a wide range of math topics from pre-algebra to plane geometry and even a little bit of trigonometry. More value is placed on earlier level mathematics skills and fewer on higher level mathematics.

There are three main types of Math problems in the ACT Test

  • Reading and Drawing Diagrams where they either give you a diagram or describe a situation that you should draw a diagram for.
  • Story Problems focuses on the mastery of linear equations and systems, which helps students develop key powers of abstraction.
  • Concept Questions are directly ask to demonstrate knowledge of specific math concepts.

Reading

The Reading section is of 35 minutes duration. During this, you need to answer 40 questions.

The four categories of reading passages are mentioned below:

  • Prose Fiction
  • Social Science
  • Humanities
  • Natural Science

Each class can embrace one passage and it is continually within the same order. The passages will be of approx. 1000 words each. You will have 10 questions to answer after every passage.

Writing

The Writing Test will be of 40 minutes. In this part, you need to write an essay. The essay prompt will include an issue with three stated perspectives. You should also explain the relationship between your perspective and the three other perspectives provided by the prompt.

Science

The science test is a 35-minute, 40 question test that aims to test the aspirant’s analytical skills such as Interpretation, Analysis, Reasoning, Evaluation and problem-solving skills in the natural sciences, and isn’t a check of data within the field of science. Students are tested across many sets of science-related passages.
Data is conferred in several formats like graphs, charts, tables and other forms while other questions will be on science experimental passages. The science section is really a reasoning or logic test. You do not need to have prior knowledge of the subject matter, though sometimes it is helpful. The focus is on deciphering information and knowledge and creating logical conclusions.

Essential elements in the PYP

The five essential elements of the PYP are:

Knowledge, which is both disciplinary, represented by traditional subject areas (language, maths, science, social studies, arts, PSPE) and transdisciplinary

Skills, which are the broad capabilities students develop and apply during learning and in life beyond the classroom

Concepts, which students explore through structured inquiry in order to develop coherent, in-depth understanding, and which have relevance both within and beyond subject areas

Action, which is an expectation in the PYP that successful inquiry leads to responsible, thoughtful and appropriate action. In order to implement the PYP, schools must have begun the process of becoming an IB World School.
